The politics of food

There is a food-fight in the bosnian parliament. Which might be preferable to other fights, but still. After getting pork back on the menu, the representatives from Republika Srpska now complains that “Serbian salad” has been removed from the menues.. Or as the article says maybe greek salad would be the proper name.

It`s not completely without presedence, though. During the Iraq war french fries was renamed “Freedom fries” in several US restaurants, including the restaurant in the “House of representatives” after the french reluctance to support the US invasion. French toast was renamed “freedom toast”
And at the moment another fight is going on in the same house after speaker john Boehner reintroduced Styrofoam cups in the cafeteria when they regained majority after house. The recyclable kind that the democrats had introduced wasn`t in tune with the rebublicans disbelieves in global warming. The democrats are now mounting a counter attach branding the new cups as a health threat

I havn´t heart about similar fights in the norwegian parliament cantine, except some complains that they don´t serve enough ecological products. It seems like a topic that should be investigated further, though. Cleary a lot of symbolism in the politics of food.
